Note, the gas spring (that looks like a shock) is slanted downward. This lets the oil in the spring lubricate the seal plus gives you the dampened stop at the end of the stroke. If the spring is level or the big end down, the oil may not lubricate the seal or dampen the end of the stroke. This will shorten the life of the spring and puts unnecessary stress on everything.

Medium for spares attached to the tailgate that are larger than standard and up to 35"

Heavy Duty for spares that are attached to the tailgate and are more than 35" or heavy stuff attached to your tailgate.

The heavier the spring, the faster it will push the tailgate, so always control the opening speed by holding it as it opens.
